Defining a global imaging platform for OPPO built on capturing people beautifully in the everyday world around them
From Apple to Huawei, nearly every smartphone brand builds "shot on phone" content to prove out its camera. OPPO had its own approach, but next to the competition it lacked a clear, distinctive edge. OPPO asked us to define a global strategy for its imaging platform: a year-long plan to relaunch its imaging narrative, new themes and mechanics for the OPPO Image Awards, and a body of content built to genuinely connect with young audiences, not just talk at them.

We started by mapping how the biggest players were already using photography to tell their story. Huawei owned precision, extreme technical capability pushed toward the extraordinary and the remote. Apple owned cinematic, emotional storytelling built around special, scripted occasions. Xiaomi owned culture, heritage and community narratives. All three had staked out real ground, and all three had the same blind spot: none of them were about the ordinary, everyday world a person actually lives in. That gap was the opening.

We built OPPO's imaging platform around Environmental Portraits, capturing people beautifully within the everyday environments they're already in, not distant landscapes or curated cinematic moments. It gave OPPO a real technical hook, its HyperTone imaging system, paired with an attitude no competitor was using: life isn't about perfect frames, it's unscripted and a little messy, and it's beautiful anyway. You don't need to be a professional. You just need to seek, feel, and capture. That positioning became the foundation for the year-long narrative relaunch, the reimagined OPPO Photography Awards, and a global communication framework.
